State Testing Information for South Carolina
Portions of the following material were taken from the
Department of Education website. Please consult your state's education website
for further information on the actual tests administered for your school.
The South Carolina College-and Career-Ready Assessments (SC READY) are statewide assessments in English language arts (ELA) and mathematics that will meet all of the requirements of Acts 155 and 200, the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) , the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA), and the Assessments Peer Review guidance.
All students in grades 3–8 are required to take the SC READY except those students with significant cognitive disabilities who qualify for the South Carolina National Center and State Collaborative (SC-NCSC) alternate assessment.
SC READY assessments will be administered in a computer-based format only, with the following exceptions:
Students who cannot take online assessments due to their disabilities, as specified in their IEPs or 504 plans, may be tested in a paper-based format.
Districts receiving a waiver from the computer-based requirement may test in a paper-based format.
The SC READY test items are aligned to the standards for each subject and grade level. Standards specify what schools are expected to teach and what students are expected to learn. Academic standards also include indicators that are statements of the specific cognitive processes and the content knowledge and skills that students must demonstrate to meet the grade-level standards. SC READY test items are written to assess the content knowledge and skills described in the academic standards and indicators.
Types of Test Items
ELA and mathematics tests contain test questions with varying degrees of difficulty.
The ELA test consists of selected response and evidence-based selected response items. The ELA test also includes a Text-Dependent Analysis (TDA) item. The TDA item consists of a passage with a writing task related to the passage.
The mathematics test contains multiple-choice, technology-enhanced, and multi-select items. Technology-enhanced items include items such as drag and drop, hot spot, drop down list, keypad input, and constructed-response (type in a number).
