More About the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) Tests

The CAASPP system is comprised of the following tests:

  • Smarter Balanced system of assessments for mathematics and English–language arts

The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium is a multistate consortium working collaboratively to develop a student assessment system aligned with a common core of academic content standards for English language arts/literacy and mathematics. As a Smarter Balanced governing state, California is a decision-making member. Smarter Balanced assessments are designed to measure student progress toward college and career readiness.

  • California Standards Tests (CST) for Science in grades five, eight, and ten

The purpose of the California Standards Tests (CSTs) is to measure the degree to which students are achieving the academically rigorous content standards adopted by the State Board of Education. Science reference sheets, developed to assist students taking CSTs in science, are provided for chemistry, physics, integrated science, grade 8 science, and grade 5 science.

Every effort has been made to consider the most recent conventions. Although there can be variability in formulas, the goal was to align the reference sheets to current instructional practices, the science content standards identified in the Science Framework for California Public Schools, and current science textbooks.

  • California Modified Assessment (CMA) for Science in grades five, eight, and ten

  • California Alternate Performance Assessment (CAPA) for Science in grades five, eight, and ten and for mathematics and English–language arts in grades two through eleven

The CAASPP was introduced to replace the STAR (Standardized Testing and Reporting) standardized test by the National Governors Association and College Board's Common Core Initiative in California. This test is based on the Common Core initiative. It was originally called the Measurement of Academic Performance and Progress (MAPP) test, but the name was changed in February 2014 due to potential confusion with the Measurement of Academic Performance (MAP) testing.
