General Description of the Tests

Georgia Student Assessment Program

  • Purposes:

  • - To measure student achievement of the state mandated curriculum
    - To identify students failing to achieve mastery of content
    - To provide teachers with diagnostic information
    - To assist school systems in identifying strengths and weaknesses in order to establish priorities in planning educational programs

  • Criterion-Referenced Tests

  • The purpose is to obtain information about how the performance of Georgia's students compare with that of students in a national sample.
  • The results are used for evaluation, decision-making, and instructional improvement.


Georgia Writing Assessments

  • Grades: 3, 5, 8, 11
  • Provide information to students about their writing performance and areas of strength and challenge
  • The information is useful for instruction and preparation for future writing assessments.


Georgia Alternate Assessment (GAA)

  • Grades: K-8, 11
  • Subjects: English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies
  • Assessment of students with significant cognitive disabilities


National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)

  • Grades: 4, 8, 12
  • Commonly known as the "Nation's Report Card"
  • The first ongoing effort to obtain comprehensive and dependable achievement data on a national basis in a uniform and scientific manner
  • The purpose of the national assessment is to gather information that will aid educators, legislators, and others in improving the education experience of youth in our country.
