General Description of the Tests Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) - Measures student learning of the state’s academic standards
- Grade 3 – Reading, Math
- Grade 4 – Reading, Math, Writing
- Grade 5 – Reading, Math, Science
- Grade 6 – Reading, Mat
- Grade 7 – Reading, Math, Writing
- Grade 8 – Reading, Math, Science
- Grade 10 - Reading, Math, Writing, Science
Second Grade Fluency and Accuracy Assessment - Every student is assessed at the beginning of second grade using a grade-level equivalent oral reading passage.
- Scores are used by the teacher, school, and district to provide support for students who need help
Washington Alternate Assessment System (WAAS) - Designed for students in grades 3-8 and 10-12 who have been identified as having significant cognitive disabilities and who cannot participate in the general assessment even with maximum accommodations
- An individualized assessment of a student’s knowledge and skills that is based upon a collection or “portfolio” of student work
National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) - A national assessment that allows educational achievement to be compared across states
- The only assessment taken by students nationwide to measure their skills in reading, mathematics and many other academic subjects
- Grades 4 and 8
Classroom-Based Assessments (CBAs) and Classroom-Based Performance Assessments (CBPAs) - To make sure students are getting key skills and knowledge in social studies, arts and health/fitness
- All grade levels
- State curriculum specialists create tasks and questions that model good assessments and provide these to local school districts. These assessments are given in the classroom by a teacher.

Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) - Essential Academic Learning Requirements - Reading
- The student understands and uses different skills and strategies to read. - The student reads different materials for a variety of purposes. - The student sets goals and evaluates progress to improve reading.
- Science
- SYSTEMS: The student knows and applies scientific concepts and principles to understand the properties, structures, and changes in physical, earth/space, and living systems. - INQUIRY: The student knows and applies the skills, processes, and nature of scientific inquiry.
- Writing
- The student understands and uses a writing process./font> - The student writes in a variety of forms for different audiences and purposes. - The student writes clearly and effectively. - The student analyzes and evaluates the effectiveness of written work.
